Tell us a little bit about your business.

Rin Hamburgh & Co is an award-winning copywriting agency based in Bristol. We work with clients ranging from sole traders to multinationals, writing everything from website copy to blog posts and white papers, video and animation scripts, LinkedIn profiles and lead magnets. We also provide consultancy and training services and are currently developing our first online training package.

What inspired you to set up your business?

I’d been working as a freelance journalist and copywriter for about 6 or 7 years and realised that I was getting way too busy - working evenings, weekends. I thought it could be a good idea to find one or two junior writers to help out, with no real thoughts beyond that. I never imagined I’d end up with an agency, employing a team and winning awards! What gave you the final nudge/ push to go for it?

What gave you the final nudge/ push to go for it?

The first trial project I did with a junior writer worked well - and about a week later I found out I was pregnant! I knew I wouldn’t be able to work the hours I’d been working before when the baby came along, so that speeded up my plans to get other people involved. Although I still wasn’t thinking in terms of an agency back then.

What has been your biggest challenge to date?

What I didn’t know then was that not only was I pregnant, but I was pregnant with twins! I also didn’t expect that their father and I would split up two months after their birth. In the end I launched the business in August 2016 as a single mum with two 9-month-old babies, which was pretty crazy when I look back on it. But I guess my circumstances made me even more determined to succeed - I didn’t really have a choice. And I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it.

Describe your greatest success/ the thing you are most proud of.

There have been lots of milestones along my journey that have felt like real wins for me. Taking on my first member of staff (we’re now a team of 5), winning our first 5-figure contract, getting our first international client, visiting 10 Downing Street as part of a cohort of female founders, winning the Small Awards ‘Supply Chain Champion’ award. It’s good to be able to stop and look back at these things on days when imposter syndrome is getting the better of me!

What motivates you to keep forging ahead with your business?

I honestly just love it. Of course there are good days and bad days. I can’t say I’ve never wanted to quit. But I love the variety, I love the creativity of coming up with a new marketing campaign, the thrill of making a sales, the satisfaction of a happy client. I also love the fact that I’m showing my daughters - who are now four - that you can be a mum and run a successful business. I want them to grow up knowing that the world is full of possibilities for them.

Thank you so much to Rin for sharing her story with us here at Cat's Pajamas. We always feel inspired hearing about the journeys of others.
